The Papaya King on St. Marks Is a Goner

No more dogs.

The reign of the East Village Papaya King has come to an end. The hot-dog-and-tropical-juice-combo shop closed its St. Marks location after four years, following — you guessed it — the purchase of its building by a developer.

Real Estate Equities Corporation plans to demolish its home at 3 St. Marks Place as well as buildings on Third Avenue to build a seven-story, 66-000-square-foot office building. It’s a bummer for the 85-year-old chain and East Village denizens with increasingly scant options for truly cheap dining. But Papaya King still has its longtime home on the Upper East Side, and also expanded to Brooklyn for the first time.
