Over Memorial Day weekend, the Disney California Adventure park at Disneyland Resort opened its new Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: BREAKOUT! attraction to wild crowds. Lines to experience the ride topped out at five hours on day one, but in just as much demand were bug-eyed sourdough loaves in the likeness of Marvel’s beloved treelike being, Groot.
Groot-shaped bread — with its jet-black pupils, made from black olives, and jalapeño-cheddar hair — sold out within hours of being introduced to the park. It’s poised to become the next red-rose cup of Disney internet fame.
Disney California Adventure unveiled a parkwide menu of Marvel-themed food in conjunction with the ride’s opening, including “spinal fluid” shave ice, superhero-designed sweets, and Hulk-inspired tacos, but it’s the $8.50 Groot bread that has made a major impression on Instagram.
The sourdough loaves are baked on-site at Disney California Adventure’s Boudin Bakery — yes, the happiest place on earth has a working bread factory inside its San Francisco–themed Pacific Wharf land. You can find sourdough Groot bread at Fairfax Market in Hollywoodland, and jalapeño-cheese Groot-shaped bread at Cosmic Canteen, or whenever you’re bound to open your phone this summer.
