Over its 36 years in business, Panera Bread has become quite valuable: There are over 2,000 cafés spread across 46 states (plus a few in Canada), but it’s a group from Europe that has now acquired the company. JAB — which also owns Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Caribou Coffee Company, Stumptown Coffee, Keurig Green Mountain, and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts — purchased Panera for over $7 billion, paying $315 per share. (Once the deal closes, Panera will become a privately held company.) Panera recently made a commitment to animal welfare, perhaps making the deal even more appealing. If JAB is smart, it’ll give people what they really want: a glazed-doughnut-bread-bowl mash-up.
