La Colombe founder Todd Carmichael believes the “fourth wave” of coffee is canned and portable, and that his “draft latte” — a cold, Guinness-esque drink with both coffee and milk — will change how Americans consume caffeine. (For what it’s worth, Grub thinks it’s delicious.) Finally, in January, after close to a year of selling only online and in La Colombe cafés, the drink will be widely available in over 2,000 stores across the country, including Whole Foods, Target, and Wegmans.
To celebrate, Carmichael actually built an apparatus to take a can of Draft Latte into space. It didn’t make it that far, of course, but the test launch was moderately successful: It reached about 175,000 feet above ground, until the GoPro froze and the balloon popped, which made the parachute open. A GPS tracked it to a location three hours away in a tree. You can watch the trip here:
