Locavorism Finally Invades the City’s School Lunches

As part of an initiative to be cutting edge 15 years ago, New York City public schools will debut a cheeseburger made entirely with New York beef today. Usually people grill burgers because it’s easy and they can still drink beers while cooking, but the “New York burger” required the NYC SchoolFood and the State Department of Agriculture to work in tandem with local farmers.

A whopping 350,000 to 500,000 will be served, of course, on compostable lunch trays today, along with three more Thursdays throughout the year. The Department of Education’s CEO of the school food office, Eric Goldstein, is pretty thrilled, and says it could lead to very exciting developments like local potatoes. Who knows — maybe rotisserie beets could be in the cards?
