Chez Panisse owner Alice Waters pioneered a food philosophy that prioritizes local, sustainable, and organic ingredients — and universal access to healthy food — but she still ended up as the target of Berkeley protesters. Ten people from the animal-rights group Direct Action Everywhere stormed her restaurant on Friday night, carrying flowers and calling out to diners, “Animals are living, feeling individuals.”
The thesis of Direct Action Everywhere’s campaign is to protest peacefully, but Chez Panisse employees say the group entered “screaming and yelling,” and then refused to leave. At that point, the restaurant called the police, who made no arrests but detained five people.
