Ben & Jerry’s Goes After Voter Suppression With New ‘Empower Mint’ Flavor

Punny.
Punny.

Ben & Jerry’s continues milking this election for all it’s worth — which, okay, so far might not be as much as steadfast Bernie backers Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield had hoped. Maybe for that reason, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the company’s latest 2016-themed flavor is arguably its most political yet. Called Empower Mint, it hopes a tasty mix of peppermint ice cream, brownies, and a fudge swirl will win people over to the brand’s Democracy Is in Your Hands effort, a campaign that (among other issues) fights for reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act. “We all deserve an equal serving of democracy,” the product’s description says, arguing that the voter suppression going on in states like North Carolina has restricted ballot access for “Black people and their allies in the rising new majority such as young people, students, and other people of color.” It’s available in pints and at Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops, and part of the proceeds from sales of the flavor go to the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP.
