In March, beloved Chinatown karaoke bar Winnie’s closed after 28 years in business, devastating countless New Yorkers. But what to do now with the former space? Is there a right way to revamp a historic bar or restaurant?
According to Community Board 3 documents, new owners will attempt to refresh the business, opening Winnie’s Restaurant in its home. The plan for Winnie’s 2.0 is that it will offer karaoke and stay open from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m., seven nights a week — all good things. But the proposed menu, curiously enough, looks like a carbon copy of El Rey’s: chia-seed pudding, vegan cashew grits, a sardine tostada, and, of course, a kale salad. Take a look:
