The Chain Gang

Carl’s Jr. Is Implausibly Behind Yet Another All-Natural First for Fast Food

It’s hard to know what to make of Carl’s Jr. — also known as Hardee’s in random parts of America. Besides having two names and its signature casual sexism, the chain last year added fast food’s first organic, all-natural burger to a menu otherwise primarily consisting of super-caloric gut-busters. Looks like the $6.99 All-Natural Burger (no name confusion there) was a hit for the company, though, because it says its organic, antibiotic- and hormone-free line is expanding nationwide today to include a turkey option.

Figuring out how to do all-natural turkey apparently took Carl’s about a year. It’s the first chain to make an organic turkey burger — and few chains even offer regular turkey burgers (Burger King flirted with the idea a few years back). A company executive explains to CNBC, “Even though most people know us as the brand to introduce indulgent, creative burgers, we also have a long history of introducing better-for-you fare, which is a surprise to some people.” Carl’s says these improved patties mean turkey burgers will now cost 80 cents more at company-run locations.
