Here’s another compelling reason for abolishing tipping: Renee Erickson, who owns the Walrus and the Carpenter, Barnacle, Whale Wins, and Boat Street Café in Seattle, found that after eliminating tipping at her restaurants, the pressure to be a good server became less gendered. “Being a woman and serving people can be uncomfortable at times,” she told KUOW. “Comments can be made that remind you that you’re working for a tip, which can be really inappropriate and difficult and not fair and not part of your job,” adding, “Nobody should have to work under that cloud of feeling like they’re not the right ‘fill in the blank’ to this person who’s controlling their income.” As Danny Meyer articulated, Erickson wants to be the one in charge of what her employee makes, instead of an “external board.”
