
While fellow members of the fast-food old guard — like McDonald’s, which has fumbled several turnaround initiatives, and expansion-crazed Subway — are struggling mightily with declining sales, things are looking rosier over at Wendy’s. Following years of stagnancy, improved sales and increased profits have encouraged the burger chain to pursue expansion over the next half-decade, during which they’ll open an additional 1,000 stores, mostly franchisees. The expansion is a big move for the third-string burger chain, coming hot on the heels of the Golden Arches’ announcement that it’ll shutter 700 of its own stores.
