Mayor de Blasio will announce a citywide ban on foam containers today, making good on a threat Bloomberg made against the ecounfriendly packaging shortly before departing. So whether it’s dine-in or takeout, halal food, Chinese food, or halal-Chinese food, the packaging won’t be legal come July 1. The city says it has built in a six-month grace period and won’t issue fines until January of 2016, and smaller venues like bodegas that really love their nonrecyclable foam and gross under $500,000 in annual revenue may get exemptions. Similar bans have already gone into effect in D.C., practically all of California, and many other major cities.
