Food-loving philatelists, today’s the big day: The Postal Service has released five classy Forever stamps honoring legendary chefs who were “early — and ardent — champions of trends that many foodies now take for granted.”

Honorees include the prolific food writer James Beard; pioneering chef and author Julia Child; Edna Lewis, the “Grand Dame of Southern Cooking” and tremendously influential chef; Joyce Chen, the author and restaurateur who introduced Chinese food to generations; and Peruvian chef Felipe Rojas-Lombardi, grandfather of American tapas. Illustrations by artist Jason Seiler are super-stately oil-painting-like, fitting for these thorough bios explaining why the five were chosen, but USPS squeezes in some humor, noting “sugar-free, fat-free, zero-calorie stamps” are now “on the menu.”
