Charleigh Matice, a McDonald’s drive-through customer in Morehead City, North Carolina, was just thinking she’d add some mayo to her chicken sandwich. Instead, when she opened it, she found a swastika made of strategically smeared butter lurking on the bun’s underside.
Alarmed, she says she went inside and got a refund and a horrified apology, but felt that wasn’t quite enough, so she took the photo to the local news, WCTI, whose newsroom worked “for several days” to verify it.
The franchise owner confirmed that the swastika wasn’t a hoax, though, and issued a statement saying they fired the person responsible, adding, “We do not tolerate that kind of behavior at McDonald’s, and it’s not what we stand for personally as owners.”
