Gothamist frames the imminent demise of Williamsburg’s long-running Verb Café as the end of an era, in which the oddball and independent businesses along Bedford Avenue are being systematically expunged in favor of more Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts, or otherwise by celeb-magnet import restaurants where things like $28 beef tartare are the norm. The creaky old coffeehouse, once a favorite of disheveled artists, will close at the end of June. “The landlord wants us to pay 70 percent more rent than what we’re paying,” says an employee.
