Watch Real Kids React to McDonald’s Terrifying New Mascot

Since McDonald’s first announced that it would introduce Happy — a gangly armed Happy Meal box with a giant toothy grin — to the U.S. market, the response has been swift and decisive: This thing’s scary as hell. What happened? Doesn’t McDonald’s marketing have focus groups to prevent exactly this kind of backlash? Then again, adults who work in media are not children, the adorable people who are in theory the actual target market for Happy, a figure that McDonald’s says “will encourage kids to enjoy fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy and wholesome beverages such as water or juice.” So, what do kids think of this toothy terror? Grub Street wanted to know, so we tracked down a bunch of children and asked them. (Spoiler: They don’t love it.)
