In the aftermath of the sudden and unexpected closing of reBar last Friday, the restaurant and venue space’s former employees have stepped up, offering to help the “hundreds of couples” who paid full or partial deposits for bookings at the still-shuttered Dumbo space. Venues like Brooklyn Winery have offered to try to accommodate others in the meantime, and there’s even an Indiegogo campaign designed to help the displaced wedding parties. Gothamist also hears a grim rumor alleging that Jason Stevens, who announced the closure internally in a short email — “Rebar is bankrupt and closed. Please dispose of your keys and do not enter the premises. Please forward to any staff not included.” —  was audited in 2013, and had been expected to start making payments on what amounts to millions of dollars in unpaid taxes last week.
