Possible Velveeta Shortage Grips Nation of Dip-Makers

Citing a tip submitted by an anonymous worker at a “Brooklyn-area grocery,” Ad Age investigates a possible shortage of Velveeta cheese. It turns out that some stores don’t have any Velveeta; others do. Maybe. (A cursory Twitter search indicates customers in certain markets are bereft, while others are scoring, maybe literally.) “Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks,” says a Kraft rep, in a statement that totally doesn’t sound like this whole thing is just an ad for Velveeta or whatever. In any event, good thing Nathan Mhyrvold pioneered a technique that basically turns ordinary cheese into a soft, processed-cheese-like stream of salty lactose. [Ad Age via Gawker, Related]
