Anyone hoping that, after last summer’s closure, the ramshackle D’aiuto retail bakery space at 805 Eighth Avenue and West 30th Street would pick itself up, dust itself off, and once again serve Baby Watson cheesecake in a shiny new setting will no doubt be bummed to learn that an eleven-floor hotel and apartment building will be erected at the address. Baby Watson cheesecake is still available at the Mona Lisa Pastry Shop in Bath Beach. It also lives on in memory, in the form of TV commercials like this one, which seemed to air nonstop on over-the-air channels like WPIX and WOR in the eighties. [Buzz Buzz Home via TRD]
