The 47-year-old hotelier was found dead last Thursday afternoon in a room at London’s Ace Hotel. “Alex was our teacher, mentor, guru,” reads a short statement on the company’s Tumblr, “and most importantly our dear friend.” The cause of death has not been reported. Calderwood, who called himself a “cultural engineer,” described his design style as spare with an element of “well-edited, carefully chosen clutter” in an interview with the Cut in 2010. The New York Ace Hotel is home to the John Dory, the Breslin, and Stumptown Coffee. The company now operates hotels on both coasts; London’s Ace Hotel opened in Shoreditch in September.
