Looking at Photos of Food Online Can Make Eating Less Pleasurable

There’s no doubt that food is overexposed these days. But you’d think that staring at Instagram photos would intensify hunger, not kill your appetite. Brigham Young University researchers say that looking at photos of food online can increase satiation, causing you to enjoy the food less when you actually eat it. “In a way, you’re becoming tired of that taste without even eating the food,” says study co-author Ryan Elder. “It’s sensory boredom — you’ve kind of moved on. You don’t want that taste experience anymore.” Apparently, Instagramming food is also causing an emerging epidemic of eating disorders.
