Three bodegas in the Bronx are now stocking fresh fruits and vegetables, thanks to an ongoing City Harvest project that aims to bring healthy options to food deserts. In areas where the corner store is best known for smokes, six-packs, and, if you’re lucky, Boar’s Head cold cuts, the sudden appearance of 24 fresh fruits and vegetables may in fact seem like a “blessing,” as one customer told the Daily News. A month ago, a similar initiative was reportedly having trouble selling, and even stocking, healthy foods, but apparently things are improving: One bodega owner tells the paper he’s now going to start selling vegetable juice in the mornings.
