In an opinion piece for the Globe and Mail, the actor applauds a recent draft of new rules established by Canada’s National Farm Animal Care Council that seem to diminish suffering. Gosling writes that gestation crates, which are used to contain sows — often for years — makes “these extremely social and intelligent animals lose their minds from being denied any social or psychological stimulation at all,” and that a loophole in the proposed code of practice allowing their continued use should be closed. The Gosling-friendly coffee-and-doughnuts chain Tim Hortons recently announced it had joined a coalition of companies that will phase gestation crates out of their supply chains by 2022.
