A new restaurant from a New Zealand restaurateur is headed for the Embarcadero this year, and the name is Waiheke Island Yacht Club. The location is Pier 29, as we discover this a.m. via the liquor license application, the same pier that was damaged by a big, four-alarm fire last June. Because of Pier 29’s significance in the America’s Cup development — it’s going to be a big piece of the viewing park and spectator village for the boat race this September — insurance money came through quickly and reconstruction of the pier began two months later. Now we learn that this restaurant with a full bar — the name of which is decidedly similar to chef Ravi Kapur’s popular pop-up, LihoLiho Yacht Club — from owner Tony Stewart, will be a piece of the facility. Stewart is the co-owner of Clooney, an award-winning, high-end restaurant in Aukland that he opened with chef Desmond Harris in 2006. We’ll update you as we learn more.
