There is an odd ice-cream truck making the rounds in the far reaches of Queens. It sells Tweety Bird ice pops and frozen SpongeBob SquarePants treats (with gumballs for eyes) like the rest, but instead of blasting the conventional — or counterfeit — version of the Mr. Softee jingle or a demented “Turkey in the Straw,” this one only puts out a depressed, tinkly version of Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns.” No one, not even the truck’s driver, knows why.
