Since being ousted from his critically acclaimed pop-up post at Mr. Pollo earlier this year, chef Manny Torres Gimenez has been doing a more pasta-focused but similar thing at Roxy’s Café just a few doors down. Now, as the Scoop reports, he’s inked a deal to take over the kitschy, old-school Palace Family Steak House space (3047 Mission Street) and all its pleather booths. The new name: The Palace. The space has been dark since October, after it was revived for about a year under new owners who attempted to keep things cheap and diner-like. Gimenez will clearly be doing something more ambitious, and says that it will still be a “steakhouse, but more refined.” Also, there will be other whole animals in the program, housemade sausage, and he’ll try to keep things affordable as he has at his previous pop-ups. (He’ll be keeping Roxy’s running too, under the helm of a chef de cuisine.) The goal is to open June 1 after a quick remodel. Perhaps this time Bauer can enjoy his food without being so concerned with the paper napkins and flatware. [Scoop]
