The East Bay Express’s Luke Tsai today takes note that a Fruitvale district restaurant, Lena’s Soul Food Café (1462 High Street), is “reclaiming the 99-cent menu” concept from the world of fast-food, and doing their own version to serve the local community. He went in and ordered a fried chicken drumstick, a hot link, and a tub of rice with pork gravy, and the total bill came to $3.23 with tax. He also notes that Lena’s is a revamp of sorts of the former Wing Town Café, from the same owners, Lamont and Calvin Andrews. They’re a nephew and uncle who named the place after the family’s matriarch, Lena Mae, who passed away in 2004, and family members regularly volunteer their time in the kitchen. [EBX]
