It’s Time for Corey Cova to Make the Doughnuts, and He Would Like Your Help

Is there a food more suited to culinary Kickstarter campaigns than the humble doughnut? It would appear not: The crowdfunding tool helped Ilene Rosen finance her popular cake-doughnut program at 606 R&D; in Prospect Heights, and now Corey Cova, the brains behind the menus of Earl’s Beer & Cheese and ABV Wine Bar, has launched a campaign to help fund Dough Loco, the latest addition to the East Harlem empire that also includes the Guthrie Inn cocktail bar and the Vinyl Wine shop.

Now that the crew has covered the neighborhood’s needs for inventive grilled-cheese sandwiches, foie gras fluffernutters, Finger Lakes Rieslings, and Moscow Mules, they’re tackling an equally primal craving: coffee and yeast-raised doughnuts, in flavors like double-glazed chocolate and miso-maple. The crew is building the space at 1261 Park Avenue themselves; they need $7,000 for a mixer, proofer, and refrigeration. Listen to Cova and his partners make their plea, and check out some of the perks: a $10 pledge buys you a sinker, while $1,000 gets you two dozen, plus the perhaps once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to conceive and name your very own variety. Dough Loco aims to open its doors sometime next month.
