PS 244’s All-Vegetarian Lunch; The Plaza Cafe’s New Outdoor Patio

• PS 244, an elementary school in Flushing, has decided to go all-vegetarian with its lunch menu, making it the first traditional public school to do so. The change came into effect yesterday with a meal of black bean and cheddar quesadillas served with salsa, red roasted potatoes, and steamed broccoli. On Fridays, the kids will gather for a weekly pizza party. [NYP]

BLT Prime is collaborating with Jack Daniel’s to host a special whiskey-pairing dinner. Courses include morel mushroom soup (with Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey) and pork belly. It’ll take place at 6 p.m. on May 14, and tickets cost $100. Call for tickets. [Grub Street]

• The Plaza Café at Rockefeller Center brings in the seasonal al fresco dining experience with the opening of the Café du Coin by Laurent Tourondel. The outdoor café will serve tuna tartare, tomato soup, and a shrimp-and-lobster roll. [Grub Street]

• A reminder that Mad. Sq. Eats returns on May 3. The spring installment will feature a bunch of new vendors like Eleni’s, Sunday Gravy, Third Rail Coffee, Seoul Lee Korean Bar B Cue, Mason Jar, and Mrs. Dorsey’s Kitchen. • You might want to go cold turkey on turkey! According to a lab analysis by Consumer Reports, more than half of ground turkey is contaminated with fecal bacteria. Some of the samples also had germs like salmonella and staphylococcus aureus, two of the leading causes of food-borne illness in the U.S. [Consumer Reports]
