John Galardi, who created Wienerschnitzel as a solitary hot dog stand at the age of 23 in Wilmington, California, died this past Saturday of pancreatic cancer at the age of 75. Since starting the company in 1961 as Der Wienerschnitzel, Galardi saw his faux-German concept expand to its position as the country’s leading hot dog franchise, selling over 120 million wieners annually, and eventually launching The Original Hamburger Stand concept and acquiring Tastee Freez as part of his Galardi Group.
