The concept of turning a beloved Polish diner into a more upscale spinoff didn’t work, and now Veselka Bowery is closed for good. The restaurant confirmed the news yesterday on its Facebook page, writing: “Veselka Bowery wants to thank all of our old friends — and the new friends we made along the way — as we close our doors today at 4 p.m. for the last time. There were great times and great food. Thank you for your unending support and thanks to the East Village community for being the best little town in the country’s biggest city.” Opening in November 2011, the restaurant only lasted a year and a half. The Veselka on Second Avenue is still serving borscht 24 hours a day. [Veselka Bowery/Facebook via EV Grieve]
