Here’s an interesting curveball-ish opening: Turns out the owner of Cafe el Portal and Casa Mezcal is well into the process of converting his Xicala Wine Bar into a new restaurant called Peix Bar de Mariscos. Chef Jordy Lavanderos and manager Paula Ginestar-Campanaro are partnering with Ignacio Carballido at the new bar and full-service restaurant on Elizabeth Street, which is named for the Catalan word for fish. Mexico City native Lavanderos has worked in kitchens around the world, including stints with Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Juan Mari Arzak, and as a chef de partie in the elBulli kitchen.
Lavanderos is cooking a fish-centric menu based on “Peruvian elements,” but one that also includes Mexican and Thai flavors. Expect a starter of whitefish ceviche with ginger, radishes, aguachile, and orange. Elsewhere, he’ll serve grilled salmon with tamarind over beluga lentils and bok choy. Apothéke barman Miguel Aranda is making the cocktails, which he says will change on a seasonal basis. The restaurant is scheduled to open next month.
