John Sedlar’s Playa, which felt like it really just hit its stride last year with its Baja chef series, an Esquire nod for “Chef of the Year,” and the revolutionary “Cielo Verde” rooftop garden the chef was cultivating, is sadly closing after service this Wednesday night. According to an announcement from the restaurant, “the concept has not met the high expectations John and Bill [partner Chait] set for it when opening two years ago,” despite its critical success. This Wednesday, Playa will hold a final bash from 6:00 to 10:00 P.M. featuring its regular menu, partially to honor Kevin Luzande’s recent “Zagat 30 Under 30” nod. The more soothing news is that Chait and Sedlar will hold on to the space, “taking a few weeks to close and retool before reopening with something entirely new and very exciting.”
