Philly Reps Hard with Multiple James Beard Media Finalists; Not So Much In Restaurant and Chef Categories

Bringing home the gold.
Bringing home the gold.

Though some early reports had Philly mostly shut out of this year’s James Beard Awards, it’s actually looking like there are more than a few local finalists to get behind, and root for. Of course Marc Vetri is a finalist for “Outstanding Service” at his eponymous restaurant, and is more than deserving of a win in that category, as is his partner and protege, Brad Spence, who received a nod today for “Best Chef Mid-Atlantic” for his outstanding work at Amis. Another no-brainer is Delaware’s Sam Calagione, who’s in the running for “Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Professional” with his Dogfish Head Craft Brewery. Still, what’s interesting is, for what our region failed to rack up in the Restaurant and Chef categories, we made up for in media. Local journalists and broadcasters were named in four of those divisions. Keep reading to see who’s in the running, and for what.
