Call it the Truly International House of Pancakes: Japanese baker Akiko Hirano will open the first U.S. outpost of her bakery Matsunosuke, which has three locations in Japan, at 58 West 8th Street, this spring. Hirano is a best-selling cookbook author in Japan, and her shops in Kyoto and Tokyo specialize in, funnily enough, a roster of Empire State-themed pastries, including deep-dish apple pie and New York cheesecake, which are sold by the slice. The carbo-Americana continues with brownies, biscuits, and pancakes topped with seasonal fruit compotes. À la mode! [REW]
