57-Year-Old Mediterranean Market Haig’s Delicacies Closing

Out in the Richmond we got news today that Haig’s Delicacies, the Mediterranean/Middle Eastern market that gave birth to a big hummus business, is closing its doors later this month. They’re currently having a 50-percent-off sale on the entire inventory, and Richmond SF reports that “the shelves are emptying quickly.” The hummus and babaganoush manufacturing now happens at a plant in Hayward, and that business will continue, but it all began here at the Clement Street store, in 1956 when falafel and aram sandwiches like they served weren’t so easy to come by. The Takvorian family, who still own the shop, say they have “the utmost gratitude to all” of their customers, and “for this community.” [Richmond SF via Eater]
