The 70-year-old UWS dive bar the Emerald Inn is almost certainly closing on May 1 and will likely become a Kate Spade retail store, West Side Rag reports. The tiny room almost closed in 2009 after its landlord threatened to double the rent, but the bar was granted a two-year reprieve at the last minute. While there has been no official announcement from the Emerald’s current proprietors or Kate Spade’s corporate office, three sources tell the blog the closure is indeed imminent, and that “guys in suits” had been seen recently showing the 800-square-foot retail space to prospective tenants.
