The big detox appears to be over, and the long-awaited Whole Foods supermarket coming to the large parcel at Third Avenue and Third Street in Gowanus will be constructed over the winter, opening its doors to the public by the fall of 2013, according to a memo the company recently sent to Brooklyn’s Community Board 6. Plans for the 52,000-square-foot store still include a 20,000-square-foot rooftop greenhouse, reports the Post. The company has been teasing goji berries and gluten-free flatbread ever since it bought the site, way back in 2004. Multiple environmental issues related to the Gowanus Canal have since delayed the organic foods giant from even laying a foundation. [NYP, Earlier]
