Here’s news of more tilapia being raised indoors in aquaculture tanks, this time in Downtown Brooklyn. DNAinfo has word of a venture called VertiCulture, which grows hydroponic vegetables on a Flatbush Avenue rooftop and recently branched into fish. The tilapia are part of a mini-urban ecosystem VertiCulture has created, whereby the fish eat plant waste, and fish waste is used to fertilize produce. Even better, the rooftop’s harvest is carted over to the Myrtle Avenue Farm Stand, which serves Fort Greene’s Walt Whitman houses. Just call it peace, love, vegetables, and tilapia. [DNAinfo]
