The Squat & Gobble location at 1 West Portal Avenue was part of a four-alarm blaze that started around 4 a.m. and was still burning as of 9 a.m. this morning. The fire spread to the wine shop Vin Debut (9 West Portal Avenue) as well, so both businesses are expected to be closed for quite a while. The inferno got intense enough that firefighters were pulled out of the buildings and instructed to just contain the fire from the outside in a strategy called “surround and drown.” [SFist, KTVU]
