Prison Hooch Responsible for Botulism Outbreak

Here’s another reason to stay sober next time you’re in jail: Last year, eight inmates in a Utah prison were sickened by botulism after downing some behind-bars homebrew. The offending ingredient in this particular batch of pruno turned out to be a baked potato taken from the cafeteria and aged in an unidentified inmate’s cell for a few weeks before it was added to the mix. The food poisoning incident turned out to be the “second-largest botulism outbreak in the U.S. since 2006,” NPR reports, before pointing readers to a recipe to try on their own. Watch out for those spores, people. [NPR]
