Hotel Monaco, Kimpton’s stunning transformation of the forever-vacant Lafayette Building at Fifth and Chestnut streets, opened the doors to the public today. And with the swanky and stylish hotel’s big debut comes Red Owl Tavern, and Stratus Rooftop Lounge. The tavern, which occupies part of the first two floors, puts forth a laid back vibe, comfort-y seasonal fare, plus beers, wines and cocktails. Ten or so stories above it, the Stratus Rooftop Lounge presents a bird-eye view of Independence Mall, and features a bar, clubby lounge seating, two private enclosed spaces, and a gigantic fire feature that will ensure things stay hot enough to serve guests all year ‘round.

Guillermo Tellez, the chef at Kimpton’s Palomar at 17th and Sansom streets and its restaurant Square 1682, heads the culinary operations for both Red Owl and Stratus. The tavern’s menus feature appetizers, like soft pretzels baked in house, and sea salt and sour Pennsylvania farm potato chips. Heartier fare like chicken pot pies, braised lamb shank, and steaks and chops is available for bigger appetites. Stratus offers sliders, skewers, thin crust pizzas and snacks to go along with its array of cocktails.
