Hugue Dufour and Sarah Obraitis say they have canceled plans to put horse-meat tartare on the menu at their five-day-old café inside MoMA PS1. The M. Wells Dinette owners issued a statement yesterday afternoon citing ambiguous laws and protesters — who argued that horse slaughter is inhumane and that horse meat has been shown to be unsafe — that had effectively forced their hand. Dufour and Obraitis point out that the restaurant served 5,000 horse-bologna sandwiches at GoogaMooga over the summer without any fuss, before inviting all the café’s neighbors to stop in to say hello and have a glass of wine. “At any rate,” they sign off, “we cry uncle.” [Diner’s Journal/NYT, Earlier, Earlier]
