As we mentioned last Friday, the second location of Michael Solomonov and Stephen Cook’s Federal Donuts opens this Wednesday, and we may not have been too far off in our crack about lines already forming out in front of the Sansom Street storefront where it’s going in. This morning the author of the “Food, Sweat, and Beers” woke before sunrise, and traversed the dark streets of Center City just to be the first in that non-existent line. Ironically, she was still forced to wait 15 minutes. But once the wait was up, this early bird scored three “fancies” — Maple Bacon, Green Tea Sesame, and Spicy PB&J; — and one hot — Strawberry fennel with pink fairy. The early word on the Maple Bacon, a doughnut we suspect will be on everyone’s lips this fall, is it’s “mind-boggling,” and reportedly presents a “savory salty creaminess” that’s loaded with bacon in each bite.
