This is bad news for the Amber India team who just opened the cavernous, 225-seat Amber Dhara at 680 Valencia, but Michael Bauer says the food does not measure up at the new, more casual spot, and he goes so far as to call it “amateurish.” He opens with “The butter chicken … told me everything I needed to know: The sixth Indian restaurant opened by Vijay Bist is a disappointing imitation of what he’s done before.” He’s not a fan of the interior, and says the service is “well meaning but slipshod.” But despite giving them one star for food and one star overall, he still finds a few dishes to compliment, saying that the Australian rack of lamb cooked in the tandoor was “OK,” and he likes the trio of chicken tikka and the rogan josh as well. But this review isn’t going to do much to fill those 225 seats. [Chron]
