They don’t have a full-fledged brewery yet, but Jesse Friedman and Damian Fagan’s two-year-old beer company, Almanac, has already become a favorite with local chefs and beer geeks. They’re doing things like using fresh hops straight from a farm in Clear Lake (hops are usually immediately dried after harvesting), and incorporating seasonal fruit in each of their brews, creating extremely food-friendly beers like a Winter Wit brewed with orange zest and ginger, and a summer beer made with blackberries and aged in wine barrels. Bold Italic tells their whole story, and they say they hope to open a brewery one of these days with a prominent food component, but for now they’re still gypsy brewers, using rented space in San Jose.
