The idea was fairly straightforward and, as so often for Grant Achatz and his comrades, an ingenious use of new technology. Martin Kastner of Crucial Detail, who makes so many of the unique serving pieces for Achatz’s restaurants, would put The Porthole, his gracefully-designed cocktail-steeping pitcher for The Aviary, into mass production if around 300 people would pay around $100 each up front on Kickstarter. Well, that threshold was reached in just a few hours, and sales kept growing. And by the time the Kickstarter appeal ended yesterday, 4,270 buyers had spent $736,113 to preorder Portholes. (Yes, that’s over $170 per buyer, but some ordered more than one, and there were also higher levels where you got other swag.) If you didn’t order one, it’s too late for now (we assume they’ll be available again as production gears up), but look at it this way. Now there’s 4,270 people you can borrow one from.
