First Look at Le Midi, Opening in Greenwich Village
Tina Vaughn and Chip Smith met working at Larry Forgione’s An American Place, when she was an ex-Rockette, aspiring actress, and dining-room floor manager and he’d just started his cooking-school externship. Since then, the couple have opened and closed two restaurants in Smith’s native North Carolina (Bonne Soirée in Chapel Hill and Carolina Blue in the Outer Banks). Their latest collaboration is a Greenwich Village spot that showcases Smith’s country-French style with dishes like ham en gelée terrine (pictured), plus housemade bread, pastries, and pastas. Vaughn compiled the French-and-Italian wine list with terroir-championing importer Neal Rosenthal, and helped refurbish the concrete-floored space, which once functioned as the loading dock of the 14th Street Woolworth’s.
