Along with the recently opened Food Crafters Institute, the artisan food producers of the East Bay are going to get a new set of commercial kitchens to share. A historic warehouse building at 2701 8th Street (at Carlton) in Berkeley is going to become a set of twelve rentable commercial kitchens, ranging in size from 500 to 1,000 square feet, and including one specially certified dairy production facility, which will be leased to an artisan cheese maker. The East Bay Express brings the news of the project, which is the brainchild of sculptor and Berkeley native Jonah Hendrickson. “I know what it is to have your own space as a small business,” he says, having previously helped convert an 85,000-square-foot building in West Oakland into artists’ studios. Berkeley Kitchens, as its been tentatively named, is under construction and occupancy date is still TBA. [EBX]
