Some events coming up soon: Amanda Puck and Tony & Cathy Mantuano invite you to drink out of bottles and eat of jars next Thursday, September 20, from 6 to 9 pm at Bar Toma. What’s that all about? They’ll be demoing how to pickle and bottle good Italian stuff, and serving it up at the same time. It’s $40 per person for all food and drink, and the proceeds go to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Call 312-266-3110 to make a reservation.

• Don’t forget the 3rd Annual Bacon Takedown, which will be at Lincoln Hall, Sunday starting at noon, giving you a chance to sample what local cooks can do with the magical vegetable. Go here for tickets— and there’s even a couple of slots for competitors left, if you feel up to bacon magic yourself.

• All-You-Can-Eat Fried Chicken at Allium kicked off last Thursday and continues through the month. It’s a feast which besides the bottomless poultry from farms you know like Gunthorp, includes corn on the cob, mashed potatoes and gravy, biscuits and honey, peach pie with blueberry ice cream for dessert— and even a cheese course of Kenny’s Farmhouse Tomme de Nena, from Kentucky, for $38 at both lunch and dinner.
